Frederick Douglass, born into slavery in 1817 in Maryland, rose up to become one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement in the United States. Publisher of the antislavery newapaper, North Star, Douglas served as an advisor to President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War and fought for the adoption of constitutional amendments to guarantee voting rights and other civil liberties for blacks. In 1877, he received an appointment as a U.S. Marshal and, on January 26, 1889, at the age of 72, Douglass was named Minister Resident and Consul General to Haiti on January 26, 1889.
